Triangle Television Wellington - A breath of fresh air for the capital

Wellington’s new regional television station which was launched on Tuesday (March 14) is set to bring the capital’s viewers an eclectic mix of local programmes and top-rated international news and current affairs shows.

An alternative to mainstream television, Triangle Television (Wellington) will develop a refreshing, entertaining and informative schedule with a strong Wellington identity. The station’s prime focus will be to screen programmes of interest to its diverse Wellington audience including a wide range of community, music, cultural, arts and entertainment shows as well as local news programmes.

Though Tuesday's function marked the arrival of Triangle Television in Wellington, broadcasting will not commence until mid-year.

Jim Blackman, Chief Executive of Triangle Television, says broadcasting regional television to Wellington is ‘a breath of fresh air’ for the capital and a huge milestone for Triangle Television.

“We’ve been broadcasting in Auckland for seven years. Today, we have the capability to broadcast to a potential Greater Auckland audience of 1 million –approximately a quarter of the country’s population - and have a cumulative audience of up to 300,000.

Though the new station in Wellington will have a clear Wellington focus, we are able to draw on the successes and experience we’ve already developed in Auckland,” says Mr Blackman.

Like its sister station, Triangle Television (Wellington) will broadcast 24 hours daily.

Mr Blackman says the station is now seeking organisations and individuals in the region who want to produce their own local programmes to screen as part of the schedule.

The station is expected to stimulate employment in the local television industry: one provider in Auckland employs 12 people to make programmes for Triangle Television (Auckland) and an estimated 200 people are regularly involved making programmes.

Mr Blackman says: “We do not impose editorial restrictions - anyone can contribute as a programme provider as long as their programmes meet broadcasting standards regulations.”

Triangle Television (Wellington) will reach a potential audience of more than 90 per cent of the population in the greater Wellington region, that is, an estimated 400,000-plus.

Approximately 85 guests attended Tuesday’s function in Wellington including representatives from government, various embassies and educational institutions, and leaders from a variety of community and ethnic groups.
