Zoning in on Wynyard Point

27 February 2006

Zoning in on Wynyard Point

Over the next three weeks Auckland City is asking for feedback on some ideas to realise the potential of Wynyard Point. This is the area between Viaduct Harbour and Westhaven Marina on the CBD waterfront. It is also known as the tank farm.

The concept framework for Wynyard Point shows options for things like land zoning, access into and around the area, building heights and concepts for the amount and location of open spaces and the fishing and marine industry.

"We have one opportunity to turn this unique area into a place for everyone, one that builds on our maritime heritage and our wonderful harbour city," said Dick Hubbard, Mayor of Auckland city.

"The large scale of this piece of land, its proximity to the CBD and that fact that it is on the waterfront mean that we need to be very considered in terms of the regulatory framework we place around the use of the land," said Mr Hubbard.

"We want to hear what people think about these concepts and options for Wynyard Point before we develop the District Plan change for the area."

The District Plan change will help ensure that any development on Wynyard Point is aligned with the vision for the whole of the waterfront which was developed by Auckland City and the Auckland Regional Council with public and stakeholder feedback.

"People shouldn't expect a development plan from us," said Mr Hubbard.

"Our job is to listen to what people have said they expect from Wynyard Point in the future and to create a regulatory framework that will enable that kind of development to take place," he said.

Mr Hubbard says that Wynyard Point is a key focus for the city's long-term plans and will deliver additional space for the expected significant growth in the city.

"We want to make sure that this amazing piece of land is developed with the growth of the city and with the benefit of all Aucklanders in mind."

The public will have an opportunity to feedback on the concepts before 17 March.

The feedback will be taken into consideration by Auckland City before it formulates the District Plan change, which will be lodged in the Environment Court at the end of May.

The District Plan change will follow the statutory public consultation process.
