Multi-Purpose Recreation Complex In Gisborne

Multi-Purpose Recreation Complex should be Considered
A multi-purpose recreation complex in Gisborne should be considered as the Olympic Pool and YMCA look at future upgrades, says Gisborne District Councillor Brian Wilson.
Mr Wilson said there is an obvious and urgent need for a multi-purpose recreational complex to be discussed.
“Because there are two major recreational providers already considering the possibility of redevelopment, then it seems to make sense to combine forces and consider the needs of the wider community.”
A report from Mr Wison on the issue, and a recommendation for the establishment of a Community Aquatic and Recreation Centre Working Party will be tabled at Council this Thursday.
GDC has already signalled a need to replace the Olympic Pool in 2014. Meanwhile the YMCA in Childers Road has been grappling with outgrowing its present facility. Its Board is considering opportunities to partnership with other recreational organisations.
“If space within a building can be used by different organisations at different times then surely multi-use will make the complex more financially viable,” said Mr Wilson in his report.
“There is an opportunity to bring other organisations on board so they too could improve their facilities and gain efficiencies in shared operating costs.”
Mr Wilson said if a working party can be formed, a detailed study on the future needs for an aquatic facility, and a scoping exercise for a multi purpose facility may follow.
