Get on your bike for Bike Wise Week

Celebrate Bike Wise Week with North Shore City and you’ll be rewarded with a delicious free breakfast and a goody bag.

Bike Wise Week runs from February 25 to March 5, with the week’s major event ‘Go by bike day breakfast’ on Wednesday, March 1.

Those that take part in the ‘Go by bike day breakfast’ can join police-escorted rides from around the city into either Takapuna or Albany, where free breakfasts are being held outside the North Shore City Council head office (1 The Strand) and at Massey University from 6.30am to 8.30am.

North Shore City Council transport planner, Isy Kennedy, says it’s an opportunity for everyone to give cycling a go, regardless of their experience.

“This is a great chance for cyclists to get together and have some fun,” she says. “It’s also the perfect opportunity for people to learn about on-road riding under the safety of police supervision.

“Cycling is a great choice,” she says. “As well as being good for you, cycling is a clean form of transport, and it’s cheaper than driving.”

Police-escorted rides to the free breakfasts will be leaving from Windsor Park, 542 East Coast Rd, heading north to Albany and south to Takapuna at 6.45am, and from Devonport heading north to Takapuna at 7am.

For cyclists who are unable to make the breakfast, North Shore City Council staff will be handing out goody bags at Devonport Wharf, Birkenhead wharf and Bayswater Wharf from 6.30am.

Isy Kennedy says the local council is working towards improving cycle facilities across the city, with plenty of cycle projects under way.

“New bike racks have been installed in several locations across the city, including the new Park n’ Ride stations,” she says. “We’re also ensuring that every time there’s an arterial road upgrade, we’ll put in cycle lanes.”
