Joe Aspell Trust grants announced
The Joe Aspell Trust Board has granted more than $31,000 to assist the city’s socially disadvantaged young people.
This round of grants follows two grants earlier this year – one of $10,000 to the Wellington Activity Centre for a literary programme and another of $5000 to the Sisters of Mercy to help with eye glasses for financially disadvantaged youth.
Trust Board chair Mayor Kerry Prendergast says she is delighted that Joe Aspell’s legacy to the city lives on through grants for socially disadvantaged young people.
“Joe was a former Wellington City councillor and company director who left his estate to a Charitable Trust to help care for and improve the lives of socially disadvantaged young people. The Trust has helped many young people and Joe will be fondly remembered by many Wellingtonians for his generosity to various charities. The Wellington City Council is proud to be associated with the Trust,” Mayor Prendergast says.
Applicants and projects funded this round include:
House of Grace Assistance with home for teenage mums $1500
Speld Mana Inc Assessment and tuition subsidy for low income youth in Tawa $1500
Wellington City Mission Alternative education programme 10,000
Wellington Somali Council Refugee Youth Development Co-ordinator assistance $5,000
Well Trust Subsidy for Counsellor salary $8500
Youthline Assistance with training expenses for volunteers $5,100
Allocations are made once a year and applications for next year’s round close in October 2006. Forms can be found on www.Wellington.govt.nz/services/grants
