North Shore City Council achieves world standard

North Shore City Council has achieved an independent, internationally renowned standard which measures how well it looks after its 1100-strong workforce.

The country's fourth largest local authority was recently recognised as an accredited Investor in People (IIP) organisation.

IIP is the only global standard that recognises best practice in personnel management and how well an organisation walks the talk on taking care of its staff.

The local licence-holder for the British-designed standard is Auckland-based Investors in People NZ Ltd, whose director Stuart Burgess congratulates North Shore City Council on making the grade.

"The council adopted the IIP framework four years ago and during that time has achieved some outstanding results through the adoption of consistent people development practices," he says.

"For an organisation of that size and diversity, the only way accreditation could be achieved was through the genuine commitment of staff to ensure that the overarching people strategies were brought to life in day-to-day operations.

"The alignment of business aims and objectives to the objectives of teams and individuals can only occur when people understand what is required of them and are supported. As a result everyone has a clear understanding of what is required of them and are more motivated to achieve business targets."

Mr Burgess says recognition as an Investor In People provides current and future staff of North Shore City Council with the confidence that their development will be consistent no matter what role they perform.

"So whether they are an engineer in the Water Services division or a part time lifeguard in Community Services, all staff are developed to their full potential."

North Shore City Council joins a growing number of Investor in People-accredited organisations in New Zealand such as Sony, Te Papa, Gosling Chapman and Wellington City Council - the only other local authority in this country to achieve the standard.

North Shore City chief executive John Brockies says the IIP accreditation is a major milestone for the council.

"People development is a key part of our Corporate Business Plan and I'm proud of everyone in my team for this achievement."
