CMJ traffic bulletin: Saturday 3 December until Thursday 8 December
Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 1
Ramp and link closures:
Monday 5 until Thursday 8 December – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Port Off-ramp (SH1 northbound)
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Sunday 4 December – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Southern motorway (SH1) southbound between Fanshawe St off-ramp to Hobson Street on-ramp
- Southern Motorway (SH1) northbound between Nelson St off-ramp and Wellington St on-ramp
Monday 5 until Thursday 8 December – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) northbound between Symonds/port/Wellesley St off-ramp and Wellington St on-ramp
Ramp and link closures:
Sunday 4 December – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound to Nelson St off-ramp
Monday 5 until Thursday 8 December – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway (SH1 to SH16 westbound) link
Monday 5 until Thursday 8 December – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Hobson on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
- Northwestern Motorway to the Southern Motorway (SH16 to SH1 southbound) link
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound to Port link
Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 December – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Port to Northwestern Motorway and Wellesley St on-ramp (SH16 westbound) link
Sunday 4 December – CLOSED – during the day and at night from 9am until 10pm:
- Newton Rd on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Note: That on the nights that the Port to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound link is closed the Newton Rd on-ramp to the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) will remain open and vice versa.
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St.
