Remuera’s new streetscape is an early Christmas gift
The makeover of Remuera’s Mainstreet will be unwrapped just in time for Christmas and should provide an economic boost for the suburb’s retailers.
The transformation of the Mainstreet has been underway for the past five months, but construction is now complete – just in time for the Christmas rush.
Auckland City project manager, Helen Mellsop, says, “The refurbishment of Remuera’s Mainstreet has been a major exercise and we’d like to thank local residents and retailers for their patience and co-operation while construction was underway.
“Local businesses have had construction workers outside their properties for the past few months, but the end result will help to boost the economic vitality of the shopping centre so it’s worth the wait.”
Ms Mellsop says a recent survey showed that the upgrade of Karangahape Road led to increased business confidence and foot traffic numbers in that area.
She says the new and improved Remuera streetscape should yield similar results for the Eastern Bays suburb.
The head of the Remuera Business Association, Robyn Simon, says, “We have had wonderful feedback from the public on the upgrade and we’re looking forward to an exceptional Christmas.
“The refurbishment has certainly made an improvement to the look and feel of Remuera. It is high quality, very stylish and in keeping with Remuera’s image.”
The $920,000 upgrade of the Remuera Mainstreet, between Norana and St Vincent Avenues, involved:
- new footpaths with basalt stone detailing
- new street lighting
- black enamel and bronze rubbish bins
- railings embedded with the Remuera crest
- new street furniture
- new planting
The aim of the makeover was to help create a unique identity for Remuera and to characterise the area as the ‘Gateway to Remuera’.
The design was developed in conjunction with the Remuera Business Association, community groups and local residents.
