No changes to rubbish collection days
It's business as usual for rubbish collection days in North Shore City this week.
Due to the council's new collections contract there was a collection of rubbish, recycling, paper and cardboard as usual on Labour Day.
Despite several notices in the local newspaper, information on the council's website and a recorded telephone message on the council's 24/7 call centre, advising people that it was business as usual, some residents assumed that as Monday was a public holiday, no collection would take place. As a result a number of households did not put their bins out.
Collections for the rest of the city will take place on the usual days and people are being urged to put their rubbish out as normal.
The council has arranged for its contractor Onyx to make extra sweeps of North Shore City throughout this week to ensure that all rubbish and recyclables are collected, even if they have been put out a day late.
"There are only four days a year when collections don't take place and these are Christmas Day, New Years Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day," says North Shore City's team leader, waste minimisation, Bradley Nolan.
"We're aware that under the new waste collections service there are some changes for North Shore City residents to adapt to. This is why we made such an effort to let people know that it was business as usual.
"We put information in the newspaper, on our website (www.northshorecity.govt.nz) and in a recorded telephone message at the council's call centre," he says.
"We've taken immediate action to make sure that people who've mistakenly put out their rubbish and recyclables a day late still get their rubbish collected this week. We don't want to repeat this exercise in the future and urge residents to check their local newspaper for information, ring Actionline call centre any time on 486 8600 or check out our website. We're also planning extra communications in the future to ensure that people get the information in plenty of time," says Mr Nolan. (ends)
