Tranz Metro Concerned Over Behaviour at Silverstream Crossing
Tranz Metro’s security manager Darren Nicholas is appalled at the behaviour of some people using the new pedestrian crossing gates at Silverstream.
Mr Nicholas says Tranz Metro train drivers are becoming increasingly concerned that the pedestrian gates are being jumped and forcibly opened whilst a train is at the station.
The drivers are well aware of the fatalities around this crossing and the feelings of the community, yet almost on a daily basis they see kids and adults crossing the barriers whilst the bells and lights are flashing.
They believe if this behaviour continues it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured at this crossing, while every driver is hoping they are not the driver at the time.
Mr Nicholas says there is a CCTV operating and he would like those people identified in the footage to be prosecuted so people realise this is a very serious offence they are committing.
He says it defies logic why young students who not that long ago had a fellow student killed at the crossing should act in an irresponsible way. They are putting their life on the line and all for just getting across the line a few seconds quicker.
