Media Release 20 September, 2005

Christchurch City Council supports National Dog Show

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore is delighted that Christchurch is hosting this week’s three day New Zealand Kennel Club Pro Plan National Dog Show. It is the first time in the show’s 51-year history that it has been held in the South Island.

The show, at the Westpac Centre from 23-25 September, has attracted more than 2000 entries. The show is being held in conjunction with PetExpo at the adjoining Addington Raceway. Patrons can buy combination tickets for the two events.

“It’s going to be a huge weekend in Christchurch for animal lovers. Visitors are coming from all over the country. It will be an amazing three days of displays and competitions,” Garry Moore says.

The show’s chairperson, Martin Hewitt says more than 140 breeds of dogs will be on display in the conformation section, in addition to several hundred dogs in the obedience and agility classes.

“We are delighted to bring such an exciting event to the South Island where the whole family can experience dogs in many different ways over a fun-filled weekend of entertainment and competition,” Mr Hewitt says.

One of the show’s highlights is the Canine Hero awards for dogs that have saved lives or achieved outstanding success as police drugs or guide dogs. There are separate awards for family pets and other highly trained dogs.
