New pay and display parking technology coming

New parking management plans and technology will be introduced to manage the city’s on-street parking following Auckland City Council’s Transport and Urban Linkages Committee meeting today.

The committee agreed to introduce pay and display parking in some streets around the Auckland Domain as the first stage in addressing the growing parking problems in this area.

This decision will be supported by new pay and display meters that are text message and credit card enabled, to replace current coin-only machines across the city over the next three years. All new meters installed will carry the new technology.

“We have shown today that we are planning for Auckland’s future and anticipating its future parking needs,” says Councillor Richard Simpson, chairperson of the Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.

“New technology and comprehensive parking management plans are necessary to serve a growing, international city.

“The Domain and some of the surrounding streets are becoming a car park for commuters. The resulting problems include restricted recreational access to two of Auckland’s premier attractions – the Domain, and the Auckland War Memorial Museum,” says Mr Simpson.

“Managing parking in this area will encourage greater turnover of car parks and provide a better balance for business, shopping, recreation and event-related visitors.

“Better management of parking is a key strategic role for the council. We must address and balance competing demands across the city as well as in areas such as the inner-city suburbs and around the Domain.

“It’s important we don’t just shift the problem, but manage the need for parking as a whole – particularly as we continue to make changes to improve the city’s transport network, Mr Simpson said.”

The new pay and display meters endorsed today follow a trial of the new technology in Princes Street and a tender process to find a preferred supplier.

The successful supplier is Cash Handling Systems Limited (CHS), who supplied the Princes Street trial with ‘Global’ meters, which accept text message and credit card payment as well as coin.

“We had an amazing response to the text and credit card options provided during the trial, with around 12 per cent of transactions being paid by these methods,” says Mr Simpson.

“People had been asking for more choice in how they paid for parking, and we responded.

“Paying for parking is a reality in any international city, but it’s vital we use technology to make payment options flexible and as easy as possible,” says Mr Simpson.

A detailed programme of where the new pay and display meters will be located is currently being developed.
