Green light for refurbished Takapuna Bus Station

Green light for refurbished Takapuna Bus Station

September 7, 2005

North Shore City's infrastructure and environment committee has approved a refurbished Takapuna Bus Station on Lake Rd.

Committee chairman, Tony Barker, says councillors supported the recommendation of the Takapuna Community Board to choose the more cost-effective refurbishment option, rather than opt for a full-blown rebuild. Detailed design work will now begin and the refurbishment is scheduled for 2006.

"Refurbishing the existing facilities will save ratepayers $1.36m. This option allows us to maintain the curved shelters, which have architectural and historical links back to the days when trams ran through this station. Lighting and information services will be modernised in keeping with the site.

"At present Takapuna Bus Station is the busiest in North Shore City, and the upgrade to this station is necessary to keep our bus passengers safe, dry and secure," says Councillor Barker.

"This refurbishment is part of a series of ongoing improvements to North Shore City's passenger transport infrastructure, with the opening of the Constellation and Albany Busway stations in November this year's most visible highlight."

The committee also requested that a study be undertaken to determine the best location for the Takapuna Visitor Information Centre, which is presently situated on Hurstmere Rd.
