Property purchase adds to open space

Property purchase adds to open space
August 18, 2005

North Shore City Council's purchase of a 6720sq m property in Birkenhead Ave will see its open space network increased in future.

The land adjoins Le Roys Bush and eventually a walkway and stairs will be put in to give access from Birkenhead Ave.

The council's community services and parks committee chairwoman, Margaret Miles, says the slice of land is a valuable addition to Birkenhead's recreational space.

"With its native and exotic trees, Le Roys Bush is a popular spot and it makes sense to give easier access to it in future so even more people can enjoy it," she says.

The three businesses that exist on the site will remain in the meantime, with the rent giving council a return on its $645,000 investment.

Councillor Miles says North Shore City is always looking out for pieces of land that will add to the city's green and leafy character, and provide access to open space for future generations.

"We have about 1200 hectares of park land across the city at the moment, and are always looking for opportunities to extend our network," she says.

"This year North Shore City Council has budgeted $1.8m to buy parkland in general, and $12.5m to buy coastal park land."
