Strong support shown for Heritage Week
Support for Heritage Week has come from numerous organisations keen to get behind Auckland City’s plans to ensure the
week-long celebration is even better than last year’s successful event.
Heart of the City will ‘light-up’ key heritage buildings within the central business district, with the help of Mercury
Energy. Two new Heritage Walks have also been developed – the combined Downtown, Midtown and Uptown Walk and the
Original Foreshore Walk and will be featured during the week-long celebrations. Heart of the City are also assisting
with sponsorship of the overall programme of events and publicity.
Alex Swney, CEO of Heart of the City says, “Heritage is one of the defining elements in the heart of Auckland. The
heritage aspects within the CBD give the city soul and a vibrancy which is strongly worth celebrating.”
THE EDGE® is supporting Heritage Week in a variety of ways. Most notably with Open Days at The Civic and classic film
evening. In co-ordination with Resene, THE EDGE® will host The Resene Classic Film Night at The Civic, with a screening
of Casablanca.
Tourism Auckland are offering free guided Tamaki Hikoi walks during Heritage Week. The Tamaki Hikoi was established by
Ngati Whatua and features ancient and sacred stories, retold as walkers are led past iconic Auckland landmarks.
Heritage Week has been buoyed up with a wave of interest and enthusiasm, from the Auckland Art Gallery, libraries,
MOTAT, the War Memorial Museum, main street associations, community groups, heritage groups and historical societies.
Councillor Christine Caughey, chairperson of the Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee thanked all these
organisations and individuals.
“Auckland City is coordinating and encouraging organisations with an interest in the city’s past to get involved in
Heritage Week. We couldn’t do it without them and are very pleased with the response for this year. It should help
ensure the event continues to grow in the years to come,” she says.
Heritage Week will be celebrated across Auckland city from 12 – 18 September 2005.
