Tunnel breakthrough

Breakthrough - North Shore City Council has completed another leg of the work to install an enlarged trunk sewer beneath Link Drive in Glenfield, as part of Project CARE.

The tunnelling machine broke through to its receiving pit opposite the BBQ factory in Link Drive late last week.

North Shore City Council is replacing the sewer that takes sewage from Sunnynook to the Wairau pumping station with a larger pipe to help prevent sewage overflows in wet weather.

The council is building the sewer using underground micro-tunnelling technology to minimise disruption to the community and the environment.

Several pits are required along the route of the sewer to place and retrieve the tunnelling machine. This has meant changes to the layout of Link Drive, but two-way traffic will be maintained at all times. The tunnel, which has come from outside Harvey Norman in Croftfield Lane and through the roundabout, will eventually join the already completed portion of the sewer, which runs from under the Sunnynook shoulder of the Northern Motorway, then under the motorway and into Link Drive outside Hoyts Cinema.

The $5.7m project is one of many improvements around the city under the Project CARE banner, North Shore City Council's long-term commitment to improving beach and stream water quality.
