Time for a Northland Pest-free Zone

PRESS RELEASE

Time for a Northland Pest-free Zone

“Now is the time to initiate a Northland pest-free zone,” said Greg Blunden, Convenor of the NZ Kiwi Foundation at their Annual General Meeting recently.

“The work of the Trust and of similar bodies in combating the possum and other predators of birdlife has been extremely successful,” he said. “We have made whole peninsulas pest-free, and after all, Northland is just another peninsula.”

He believed that the total amount now expended on pest control between the Auckland Harbour Bridge and Cape Reinga would have to be augmented by only a relatively small amount to achieve a Northland pest-free zone.

“Imagine Northland as a massive farm-park, free from mammalian predators, a place of safety for our native birds and plants and more beautiful, far more beautiful than it is even now.”

In achieving its goals for the past year, the Foundation was grateful to funding from the ASB Trusts, Scottronic Technologies (Kerikeri), and Enterprise Russell as well as the Northland Regional Council, WWF-NZ, BNZ Kiwi Recovery Trust, QEII National Trust, and the government’s Biodiversity Funds
