Spend your weekend on wheels

North Shore City's next fun destination for young people is under way, with earthworks for Greville Reserve streetscape started earlier this month.

The $140,000 streetscape project will include stairs and kinked and curved ledges for skateboarders, rollerbladers and BMXers, as well as seating so young people can socialise and watch.

North Shore City Council community services and parks committee chairperson, Margaret Miles, says the streetscape will eventually link up with another activity area planned for the reserve.

"A path will take young people from the streetscape to where we will put in a half netball and basketball court, equipment such as a supernova swing, and 'hang out' space," she says.

Greville Reserve, on the corner of Forrest Hill and East Coast roads, was identified as a key one for development under the council's Youth Destination Plan.

Young people across the city were surveyed to find out more about where they wanted to go and what they wanted to do.

"The aim is to create places where people of all ages can go, but that fit into the environment. It's not just about building things, but combining activities," says Councillor Miles. Greville Reserve is already a popular destination for families, and is seen as a particularly safe place because of its visibility from two busy main roads.

North Shore City Council is investigating traffic safety with regard to people crossing these roads.

The streetscape project is expected to be finished in time for next summer, and the activity area - complete with landscaping including rocks, decorative logs and gardens - will be done next year.
