2HOT2 Handle to close Aotea and Waterloo Quays

Aotea and Waterloo Quays will be closed – and traffic to and from the Interislander ferry terminal diverted – on Easter Saturday and Sunday (26 and 27 March) for the duration of the 2HOT2Handle auto show in around the Westpac Stadium.

The waterfront quays between Kaiwharawhara and the Railway Station will be closed from 6am Saturday till 7pm Sunday to allow motor racing and vehicle displays to take place.

Police and the City Council say there may be delays in the CBD if the event attracts big crowds.

Senior Sergeant Richard Hocken of the Wellington Road Policing Group says motorists heading through the city should leave early, expect some delays and exercise patience.

He also recommends that people heading for the event should take the train or bus, if possible.

Traffic from the CBD heading to the Interislander terminal at Kaiwharawhara will be diverted along Whitmore and Stout Streets, Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road to opposite Beaurepaires – where it will be U-turned then back over the old Hutt Road overbridge to the terminal.

Traffic heading from the north should head to the terminal as per usual – by leaving SH1 and SH2 at the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge and heading along the old Hutt Road.

Vehicles heading from the north to the Bluebridge and Lynx ferries adjacent to the Railway Station will be diverted - with special signage starting at the Hutt Road Overbridge along Hutt Road, Thorndon Quay and Bunny Street and across to their terminals. Traffic from the CBD heading to the Lynx and Bluebridge is unaffected.

Traffic heading to CentrePort will enter through the Bluebridge terminal (access to the main CentrePort entrance in Waterloo Quay will be opened from the south only – during the event – from 7pm Saturday until 6am on Sunday.

Vehicle access to Platform 9 at the Railway Station will remain open – but from the south only.

The overhead signs warning signs on the Ngauranga Gorge and motorway will start flashing messages from today (Wednesday 23 March) advising of the closure of Aotea Quay offramp on 26 and 27 March.

Variable Message Boards will also be positioned on the motorway to advise of the closure of the Aotea Quay offramp. All signs for ferry passengers will be altered early on Saturday morning.
