Thorndon Overbridge median barrier replacement

Transit New Zealand is replacing the median barrier on the Thorndon Overbridge State Highway 1. The new barrier will provide a higher standard of side protection for motorists, and will be easier to maintain.

The construction works are due to start on Monday, 7 February and will continue until early May, depending on the weather. The fast lanes northbound and southbound will at times be closed to allow a safety zone between the contractors and motorists. These closures will be removed during peak traffic flows.

Project Manager Mark Pinner says “ The median barrier along Thorndon Overbridge will be upgraded and strengthened. The existing barrier, which was constructed in the 80’s has proven very effective but is unlikely to withstand an impact from a large truck. Transit is keen to install a higher standard barrier which will also be easier to maintain.

“The new barrier will be set 150mm further back from the carriageway to stop drivers from feeling ‘closed in’ on the fast lane. The leading edge of the existing barrier is placed very close to the carriageway edge. The new barrier will be set back, which will provide for a more comfortable drive,” Mr Pinner said.

“There will be minimal disruption to traffic flow. We are asking off-peak motorists in particular to obey speed restrictions for their own safety and that of others.”

This contract involves very detailed work along the project length. The contract, worth $1.1m, was won by Riverside Construction Limited.

Police will be strictly enforcing the 70 Km/h temporary speed restrictions that will be in place when the fast lane is closed. When no work is being undertaken there will be no restrictions.
