Summer's Here: Time For Dancing in the Street

Summer's here and the time is right for Dancing in the Street
Pitch Black, Concord Dawn, Baitercell and Schumacher, Minuit, Soane, and Havoc are just some of the headline acts playing for free on Auckland’s CBD streets this summer, thanks to Auckland City’s Dancing in the Street series.
Dancing in the Street is a celebration of New Zealand music for all ages, featuring some of Auckland’s finest DJs and bands.
The ultimate in street parties kicks off on Friday 28 January. Baitercell and Schumacher break it down with Northshore turntabilist DJ Logikal, hip hop veteran Tha Feelstyle and the award winning hip hop duo Misfits of Science, to showcase the talents of the New Zealand hip hop scene.
“Can’t stop hip hop ‘cause it doesn’t stop” rings true on 18 February, with Dancing the Street #2 featuring New Zealand’s up-and-coming hip hopper’s Frontline. They share the stage with premiere drum n’ bass duo Concord Dawn and electronica break beat bandits Minuit.
This year also brings a special edition to the music calendar, with Dancing in the Square on Friday 4 March. Aotea Square will be serving up dark electronic dub from Pitch Black, along with dark and dirty drum n’ bass duo Concord Dawn, Nick D and 15 piece group Batucada Sound Machine, who mix Brazilian and Cuban grooves with hip hop and drum n’ bass styles.
The last time to get your booty shakin’ is on 18 March, with Soane delivering some of the finest house and 95bFM DJs Jason Rockpig, Havoc and The Professor each spinning a set to produce some high voltage dance floor anthems.
Dancing in the Street is a programme of free street concerts which make up part of Auckland City’s Music in Parks series. These are held once a month on Friday evenings (8pm to midnight) over summer, January to March, in closed-to-traffic Lorne Street (behind the St James Theatre). Check www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/mips for more details.
These a just a few of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City, in association with 95bFM, as part of the Ak@Play summer events programme.
