Press Release
Ramp closures and lane changes on Southern Motorway
Transit New Zealand advises that ramp closures and a temporary lane configuration will be in place on the Southern Motorway between Upper Queen Street and the Grafton Road on-ramp from 9pm Friday 19 November until 6am Monday 22 November.
The Symonds Street on-ramp and the link from the Northwestern (SH16) to the Southern Motorway (SH1) will be closed all weekend, from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday. A temporary southbound lane layout, maintaining two lanes for SH1 traffic, will also be in place from 1am Saturday 20 November until 6am Monday 22 November.
Motorists travelling from the Northwestern Motorway onto the Southern Motorway will be diverted to the Wellesley interchange. The detour route will direct traffic onto the Southern Motorway at the Grafton on-ramp.
The Northwestern to Southern Motorway connection will shift north (back to its usual location) from 6am Monday 22 November.
The closures are required for completion of an expansion joint on the eastern side of Grafton Bridge 3, located just south of the Symonds Street over-bridge.
All detours will be fully signposted and closures will be publicised in the New Zealand Herald public notices and on the radio. Motorists are asked to drive with caution and be aware that there could be delays. Transit thanks motorists in advance for their cooperation.
On completion, this work will create extra capacity in the Central Motorway Junction. The work is part of Stage 1 of Transit New Zealand's Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, expected to be completed in January 2005.
