Historic Moa Cave closed by City Council

Historic Moa Cave closed by City Council

The Christchurch City Council has closed the historic Moa Cave in Redcliffs after receiving a geologist’s report which found the cave’s roof and face were potentially unstable.

Richard Bailey, the Council amenities maintenance team leader, said the Council was taking preliminary precautions by cordoning off Moa Cave indefinitely until investigations could determine what could be done to ensure public safety.

It was unlikely that the historic site would be reopened before the end of January, 2005, due to the likely detailed report needed before any safety measures were taken. As an historic site, there would be certain criteria to be met before any work was carried out at the site. Until then, the public would be banned from the site.
