City Council To Look Closely at Carisbrook Options
Dunedin (2 November , 2004) – The Dunedin City Council will need to look closely at options to develop Carisbrook before consulting with residents and ratepayers about any potential decision, the Mayor of Dunedin, Peter Chin, said today.
Mayor Chin said the City Council is pleased to be a member of the Working Party looking at the future of Carisbrook, and the Council would need to consider the options presented by that Working Party.
“Carisbrook is a significant asset for our community and the activities there have considerable economic impact on both our City and the region,” Mayor Chin noted. “Therefore, in the interests of the city’s ratepayers we need to take an active interest in the future of the ground,” he said.
“At the moment we have made no decisions about Carisbrook. I am pleased that the consultation process the Working Party is undertaking will help us in when the time comes for us to make decisions,” he said.
A Working Party looking at the future of Carisbrook is consulting residents in the Otago region and asking them which of three options for the future of Carisbrook they favour. Those options are: The Status Quo; an upgrade of the ground over time; or the resiting of a new facility near the waterfront. The details of the consultation programme and options are available at www.CityofDunedin.com/Carisbrook.
“If and when the City Council has to make any decisions about its involvement with Carisbrook it will be fully consulted through our Annual Plan and Community Plan process,” Mayor Chin said.
The Working Party’s efforts will include looking at funding and ownership options for Carisbrook.
