Dangerous overtaking puts lives at risk says Transit
Transit New Zealand is concerned there will be a serious crash on State Highway 2 through Awatoto if motorists continue to ignore the painted median strip installed recently.
Transit Napier regional manager Neville Harkness said Transit and the Napier Police had received a number of complaints about motorists using the painted median to overtake other vehicles.
“Not only is this illegal, but it is very dangerous. There have been a number of near misses with oncoming vehicles or vehicles slowing in the median strip to turn right into industrial properties alongside the highway.
“The painted median improves safety on this busy stretch of highway. It separates traffic streams and provides a refuge for vehicles, many of them trucks, waiting to turn right off the highway. But the median won’t be effective if motorists continue to ignore it.
“Motorists who overtake on the median are putting their own lives and those of their passengers and other road users at risk.
“It would be disappointing to have the increase in safety provided by the painted median for the occupants of the 14, 000 vehicles using the road each day lost through the inappropriate actions of some impatient drivers,” said Mr Harkness.
He said using a painted median for overtaking was an offence and could result in a $150 infringement notice being issued.
“The Police will be keeping a close eye on the situation.”
