Dunedin Celebrates Common Sense Environmental Ruling

Dunedin (4 Oct, 2004) – Dunedin City is celebrating an Environmental Court ruling that has opened the way for significant investment and expansion of industrial activity in the City.

After a five-year battle, the Dunedin City Council has won approval to create a 37 hectare industrial zone at Mosgiel, on the outskirts of the City.

Malcolm Farry, chair of the City Council’s Economic Development Committee said the ruling is a victory for common sense.

“We’ve had people queuing up to set up or expand business in Dunedin but we haven’t been able to give them the space to do it,” Mr Farry said.

“The obstructive tactics of pressure groups like Plain Sense has been stupid and now sanity has prevailed. This is a victory for common sense over environmental and pressure group foolishness,” he said.

The Environmental Court ruled today that the rezoning of the Mosgiel land under the City’s District Plan should be upheld, dismissing appeals from environmental group Plain Sense and a nearby resident.

“Now it’s up to the Council to develop an active economic development strategy to attract the businesses we want,” Mr Farry said.
