Rodney District Council Ministerial Visit 17 Sept

Rodney District Council Ministerial Visit 17 September 2004

John Law, the Mayor of Rodney, welcomed the Hon. Judith Tizard, Minister for Auckland and Associate Minister for Transport, to Rodney last Friday.

She was there to recognise the joint efforts of Rodney District Council and Transit New Zealand in progressing the Northern Motorway Extension. This is also known as the ‘Alpurt B2’ section of State Highway 1.

The project has reached the stage where Transit is now in a position to apply for upfront construction funding and an Order in Council for the Northern Motorway Extension as a toll road, following the completion of consultation on the proposal. The application is in the hands of the Ministry of Transport and the Minister for Transport. The Minister, under his powers in the Land Transport Management Act, will make a decision about whether there is sufficient support for the proposal to advance the Northern Motorway Extension through tolling. If so, he will have an Order in Council drawn up to enable Transit to apply for funding. Transit, in its alliance with the Northern Gateway Alliance, will build the motorway extension.

See http://www.transit.govt.nz/alpurt_b2/ for more information on the project.
