Labour Eastern Transport Corridor Survey

The Labour candidates for Auckland City Council and Tamaki Community Board today announced the results of their survey of 3000 residents living near the Tamaki part of the Eastern Transport Corridor.

The survey was designed, conducted and funded by the team themselves.

“Of the 130 replies, 27% favoured the highway and 71% were against”, says Council candidate and former ARC Councillor Jack Henderson.

“A further 81% favoured local roading improvements, which we are pledged to deliver as a team, following proper public consultation.”

“A third of respondents wrote, unprompted, of public transport as a concern, which justifies our policy of increasing train and bus frequency”.

“Names and addresses were supplied by 76 households, 58% of the total returns. It is clear that the public feels empowered by Labour’s continuing commitment to, and style, of consultation.”

“While it is coincidental, it is appropriate that we are releasing this at the same time as Auckland City’s latest highway proposal, because in this era of public relations consultants selling policies conceived by politicians, the Labour candidates in Tamaki/Maungakiekie believe in seeking the views of residents."

Survey forms used post-paid replies and were individually numbered. Results follow:

Q1: Are you in favour of the current Council’s proposed arterial highway running from Howick to the City as shown on the map?

yes = 36 (27%) no = 92 (71%) no response = 2 (2%)

Q2: Are you favour of improving existing roads in the Panmure / Glen Innes area to improve local traffic flows?

yes = 105 (81%) no = 20 (15%) no response = 5 (4%)

Wrote in public transport (without prompting): 43 (33%)

Gave names and addresses: 76 (58%)
