Rodney Big Winner in Transport - Funding and Project Announcements

Mayor John Law says Rodney District is one of the biggest potential winners in the list of transport projects and funding that has just been announced by central government.

Mr Law says Rodney District has achieved outstanding results from a continued and targeted campaign to build up the quality of its relationship with Transit New Zealand and Transfund New Zealand and to make sure Rodney’s message is heard.

“Transit’s National State Highway Plan places ALPURT Sector B2 top of the list of New Large State Highway Projects in expected construction priority. The start date is summer 2004/2005.”

“But that is only the start of the good news for Rodney. There are millions of dollars more in new works in the Plan this current year and in the very near future. The total transportation funding just announced amounts to more than $313 million. These are all Transit State Highway Projects,” the Mayor said.

The planned projects, funding and commencement dates for Rodney’s State Highways and local roads that the Mayor is highlighting are in the just-released Transfund National Land Transport Plan 2004/05 and Transit’s 10-Year State Highway Plan 2004/05 – 2013/14.

“Consultation has to be completed on ALPURT B2, and there is some work yet to do to finalise details on the local road initiatives, but the quality of our relationship with Transit and Transfund should see these matters resolved quickly” Mayor Law said.

The funding agency Transfund has released its National Land Transport Programme and this includes an Indicative Priority List of Local Road Projects in Rodney in 2004/05 with a total value of more than $37 million. These are local road projects which generally receive Transfund funding to the tune of 58 per cent. Transfund’s Programme notes that Indicative Priority local roading projects are not yet approved at this time, but will be considered for approval at monthly reviews of the Programme, once they are confirmed as ready to commence. Based on experience in previous years, Transfund’s Programme says, not all of these projects will be ready to commence during the year.
