Rail Construction Underway Over School Holidays

Rail Construction Underway Over School Holidays

30 June 2004

The next phase of construction work on the Western Rail Line will begin this weekend, and continue over the July school holidays.

The Auckland Regional Council is managing the project on behalf of the Crown, to double track the Western Line between Boston Road in Mt Eden, and Morningside Drive in Kingsland.

The project will increase service reliability and capacity, by eliminating a rush-hour bottleneck which is caused by a lengthy stretch of single track.

Contractors will be working daily over the school holidays between July 3 and July 18, when there is less demand on rail services, and this section of the line can be shut during daylight hours to allow essential construction work to be carried out.

A similar phase of construction took place over the Easter school holidays.

Over the July break, regular train services will be disrupted on weekdays between 8.30am and 4.30pm, and on weekends between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm. Buses will be used to replace all affected services, and a revised timetable will be in place over the holiday period.

Construction work will continue in stages until project completion, which is estimated to be in early 2005.
