Council To Consider Speed Limit On Hill Road

Council To Consider Speed Limit On Hill Road

The Porirua City Council will consider lower speed limits on the Paekakariki Hill Road following a motorcycle accident on Sunday.

The road was closed for almost three hours on Sunday when a motorcycle hit a car on a notorious corner just north of the Pauatahanui Village.

Two ambulances and a helicopter attended.

The motorcyclist was airlifted from Battle Hill Regional Park to Newtown Hospital.

Cr Shaw said several residents were distressed by the event. The reality of accidents upsets adults and children.

"It is unfair on Pauatahanui people that they should have to live with the constant threat of accidents" he said.

"Traffic volumes on the road are high and increasing as people try to avoid traffic jams at Pukerua and Plimmerton."

"The Hill Road is now used regularly as an alternative to State Highway 1, and it is not designed for such traffic. "

"This road is supposed to be a local road, but in fact it functions as a state highway. Its use has also increased because of commercial enterprise in the area and lifestyle blocks."

More realistic restrictions would be 50 and 80 kmph in different places Councillor Shaw said.

Cr Shaw said he had asked the chief executive of the Porirua Council to bring the matter up at the next full council meeting on the 21 April. "We need to act quickly on this" he added.
