NEWS RELEASE

Warning Not To Use Flood Damaged Furniture

Hutt City Council is warning people not to take furniture placed outside homes that may have been exposed to floodwaters as it is likely to be contaminated with sewage.

"While some furniture placed outside homes that have been inundated by floodwaters may look in reasonable condition it is impossible to clean it to a standard that will remove sewage contamination," said Kirk MacGibbon, Hutt City Communications Manager.

"Any furniture such as lounge and dining room suites, beds and mattresses that have been wet by floodwaters must be treated as if they are contaminated by sewage.

"It poses a health risk and should be disposed of responsibly."
