Spectacular Regatta for Takapuna in 2005
Up to 100 yachts and 300 people could well be involved with a major international dinghy sailing event in North Shore
City in February 2005.
North Shore City Council supports the Takapuna Boating Club's bid to host the International 14s event in the city, using
its new clubrooms at Takapuna Beach as a base.
The yachts carry a big spinnaker, with two crew on trapezes to provide fast and spectacular racing with starts and
finishes close to the beach.
The event is expected to boost tourism in the Takapuna area, and will be a major attraction for competitors, supporters
and yachting fans alike.
Chairperson of the council's community services and parks committee, Margaret Miles, says the regatta, to run from
February 3 to 21, 2005, is expected to attract entries from ten countries.
"This is the first time in many years that the club has run such a big event, and it's expected that local restaurants,
bars, accommodation and visitor services will notice a big increase in patronage.
"The event could bring up to one million dollars in economic benefits to the local economy. It is also anticipated that
30-40 international media will visit the area," she says.
Storage will be needed for 13 containers and on the beach reserve for the storage of yachts. Two temporary boat ramps
will be needed on the Takapuna foreshore reserve, and 20 rescue boats will need access to a boat ramp.
"Our congratulations go to the club for the work it has put into organising these events, and I am sure we will all
welcome visitors to our shores so that they can enjoy the beach, the water and the atmosphere of a highly competitive
but also a fun event," says Councillor Miles.
