Retailing commitment welcomed by mayor

Retailing commitment welcomed by mayor

North Shore City Mayor George Wood is pleased to hear that Westfield New Zealand has lodged its long-awaited application to develop a retail and entertainment centre at Albany, featuring up to 90 shops and a multi-screen cinema.

"This shows Westfield's continued commitment to North Shore City and that's good news for our local economy," Mr Wood says.

"Albany is one of the faster growing areas in our city with population increasing by 55.9 per cent since 1996. This council is working closely with Westfield, The Neil Group and other organisations to ensure Albany Centre develops in a co-ordinated way that meets the needs of our community.

"I understand that this proposed 30,000 sq m development could generate 3440 jobs in the construction and retail sectors. It is one of this council's goals to have local people employed within our city so such employment opportunities are welcomed by our residents."

Westfield New Zealand lodged its resource consent application with the North Shore City Council last week.
