ARC awards over $100,000 for community projects with EIF grants
5 November 2003
Community volunteers are the focus of the latest Auckland Regional Council Environmental Initiatives Fund allocations, announced this week.
The aim of this funding round was to provide practical materials, including native plants, fencing material, and worm farms, for community initiatives such as wetland, dune, and riparian restoration; plant and animal pest control; and waste reduction.
The total funding allocated was $114,473.14, which was awarded to 41 out of 50 applicants. Of the successful applicants, 29 received a total allocation of $77,419.64 from the General EIF Fund, while twelve were awarded a total of $37,053.50 under coastal funding – an EIF fund of $60,000 set-aside in this financial year for projects that promote sustainable management of the coastal marine area. Coastal funds come from the back-fees received by the ARC from the Half Moon Bay Marina’s licence fees.
ARC chair Gwen Bull said the EIF was established in February 2000 with the aim of supporting practical projects that enhance, restore and protect Auckland’s natural, cultural and physical environment. “Over the past three years the EIF has fulfilled this aim by awarding funds to 190 environmental projects led by all different sectors of the community,” Cr Bull said. “The ARC intends to continue to support and encourage community-driven initiatives through the EIF.”
The deadline for applications for the next funding round will be on 26th February 2004. Applications and fund guidelines can be obtained in early January by phoning ARC, 366 2000 or by downloading the forms from the ARC website www.arc.govt.nz.
