New harbour crossing should link with Corridor
The next Waitemata Harbour crossing should intrinsically link to the Eastern Transport Corridor, Auckland City Mayor John Banks said today.
“An option for a harbour crossing from the North Shore to Mechanics Bay needs to be fully investigated against the proposals unveiled by Transit yesterday. “
Mr Banks added: “A North Shore to Mechanics Bay option will depend on just where the preferred Eastern Transport Corridor route meets the CBD.”
“We need all of the options on the table now to enable the region to complete the rest of the integrated transport network with confidence,” said Mr Banks.
“If we do it right and with a sense of vision for delivering the transport needs of future generations, an additional harbour crossing will help give Auckland a ring-road network that includes options for busways and extending the rail network.
“As Transit has confirmed many times, the effective operation of Auckland’s transport network is limited by the capacity of the north-south corridor. Completing the triple by-pass – the western and eastern corridors – will reduce reliance on just one corridor. Both are top priorities and we continue to make progress,” said Mr Banks.
