Council Can't Supply Names From Rating Records
Hutt City Council is advising people that it can no longer provide owners' names when Council supplies property details held on its rating records.
Under old local government legislation, any person could ring Council and ask for details about individual properties and be provided with those details, including the name of the property owner.
>From 1 July 2003, the new Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 expressly forbids the divulging of owners names to third parties.
"The intent of the law is to protect the individual's right to privacy. The effect of the law is that callers are taking their frustrations out on our call centre staff when they are refused the information they have asked for," said Kirk MacGibbon, Communications Manager.
"We have no choice in this matter and the change has been brought about solely by the new legislation. It is not an issue of any policy change within Council."
