Weather Situation:
There is a large high in the Tasman Sea that is bringing northwest to westerly winds to the south of the country and southwest to west in the north. We have a small low sitting to the northeast, but we can't see a lot of swell, if any, coming off that. The beast of a low that is sending a big southwest swell up the West Coast today and tomorrow will be pushing a south swell up the East Coast tomorrow. We are already starting to see the swell rise in Dunedin.
Regional Report:
North Island
Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:
West Coast: The swell is 4-6 feet this arvo and real messy, with west to southwest onshore winds on it. Now, the forecast isn't much better for the weekend with a rising southwest swell tomorrow, it should be huge. Onshores continue though, with west to southwest tending northwest late Sunday. HT 1420. East Coast: I wish I could say we will be surfing, but it doesn't look like it at all. Offshores all weekend from the southwest. Tending northwest, with possible northerly late Sunday and then back to the west Monday. Just a low 0-1foot at the most, by the look of things from the east. HT 1200.
Gisborne; Wairarapa:
We will be surfing on this coast, this weekend. This arvo we have fresh northwest offshores and 2-3 feet of rising southeast swell. We are expecting a lot more swell from the southeast tomorrow. West to southwest winds is forecast, so go hunting gang. HT 1040. Camera Link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/34504C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/
Taranaki:
No shortage of swell from the southwest this weekend, but the winds are not going to co-operate. Tomorrow arvo we have a southwest forecast and this could be our only hope, as west to northwest winds are on the cards for Sunday. HT 1440. Wellington:
West Coast; Onshores all weekend this weekend and a rising wind swell from the northwest. Plus we will see a southwest swell wrap in tomorrow as a big southwest swell pushes up the West Coast. Maybe The Pa will be working this weekend.
South Coast; Strong northwest offshores today, with the tiniest of lines in the Bay. The northwester should ease tomorrow and with any luck we will see a south swell develop. We are expecting the swell to build tomorrow. The northwester is forecast to come back with a vengeance on Sunday. So fingers crossed and we will be surfing. Definitely waves on the East Coast this weekend. HT 0945. Camera link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/34506C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/
South Island
West Coast:
West to northwest winds all weekend, this weekend, and masses of swell from the southwest. This arvo it's 6-8 feet and still rising. We are expecting even more tomorrow. No sign of an offshore until early next week. HT 1530. Camera link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/34507C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/
Kaikoura; Canterbury:
Waves this weekend with a south swell on the rise, that should kick in tomorrow arvo. Plus a northwest wind swell pushing down the coast from the Cook Strait. West to northwest winds all weekend. Kaikoura is going to have waves with west to northwest winds and a rising south swell. We have 2-3 feet and we are expecting a lot more by tomorrow. HT 0940.
Dunedin; Southland:
The swell is on the rise from the south today and we have 4-5 feet already and we are expecting more. It should peak tomorrow arvo. West to northwest winds for the weekend so no excuses. Go looking for that perfection. HT 0820. Camera link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/34508C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/
