Auckland Museum will open its war memorial galleries to the public after the 5.30am dawn service this year.

The galleries will remain open until 8am, then close until after the 11am service, when the Museum will reopen to the public. This is the first time that the Museum has opened its war memorial galleries to dawn parade participants.

The 11am service will be followed by a day of commemorative activities at the Museum. Bugler William Gunson will play a selection of wartime favourites and commemorative pieces in the foyer at midday, and will be followed at 12.30pm by a performance of Gunner Inglorious, a one-man play based on the autobiography of World War II veteran Jim Henderson.

Children are invited to Discovery Centre workshops from 12.30pm until 2pm where they can design their own medals or make a poppy. From 1pm to 4pm visitors can search the Museum’s Cenotaph database or bring along records to be scanned into this online resource.

The Jubilate Chamber Choir will perform songs of remembrance at 2pm, and at 3pm the Museum will screen Lest We Forget, a programme of historic films of New Zealanders at war.

On display in the Museum’s Pictorial Gallery, is Land Wars to World Wars, a selection of paintings and drawings from the collection Greg Moyle. The exhibition, which presents scenes of war, is strong in New Zealand work and includes paintings by officially commissioned war artists such as Peter McIntyre and Russell Clark.

Works by ordinary New Zealand soldiers are also on display. Land Wars to World Wars is on display throughout April and May.
