Media Note On Dog Laws:
To All Chief Executives, Mayors/Chairs And Communication Officers Of Council And To All Media - Clarification re Local Government New Zealand Media Release on Dog Control Powers
Following the release of its media statement this morning titled "Action Needed to Strengthen Dog Control Powers", Local Government New Zealand wants to ensure that media and others interested in this subject are clear that paragraph five, relating to powers around the seizure and retention of dogs, refers only to dogs that have displayed threatening or rushing behaviour.
If a dog has made physical contact and, or, attacked somebody, dog control officers do have the power to seize or retain the animal involved and, if necessary, go on to private property to do this.
