Otara by-election nominations open
Nominations for the Otara Community by-election in February have been open for over a week now with a limited response.
Since November 18 Council electoral officials have only received one nomination for the position left vacant by the departure of John Peterson. With nominations closing at 12 noon Monday 16 December there will need to be more names received than the current nomination to force an election.
“Otara is a large ward incorporating all of Otara, vast areas of the East Tamaki industrial area and new suburbs such as Dannemora”, said Electoral Officer John Skelton. “Elections allow residents in the affected areas to ask questions about their representation – is the current level OK or do they think they could, or someone they know, do it better”.
“For those that feel they are underrepresented the upcoming by-election is their chance to do something about it. As the role is for just over half of the normal term it is an ideal situation for someone who has had more than a passing interest. Serve the shortened term, if they enjoy themselves and felt they made a difference stand again in October 2004 for a full term”.
“Prospective candidates can come into or ring the Council and ask for the electoral officials if they wish discuss what is involved with becoming a community board member and how they can stand in the election”.
There will also be a stand at the Otara market this Saturday with electoral officials ready to discuss the role and the election generally.
“We welcome any calls regarding the election especially from those interested in standing said Mr Skelton. During this stage of the election process it is all about getting as much information out as possible”.
