Lanes to be closed on the Southern Motorway
From 25 November 2002, for the next two months there will be some lane closures at night on the southbound section of the Southern Motorway between Grafton and Khyber Pass. The closures will take place from 8pm until 6am Sundays through to Thursdays.
Transit New Zealand therefore advises motorists to use alternative routes as much as possible to ease congestion in this heavily trafficked section of the motorway.
Transit Regional Manager Wayne McDonald explains that the closures will allow for strengthening works on the Khyber Pass Viaduct which is part of Stage 1 (Khyber Pass to Gillies Ave) of the Central Motorway (Spaghetti) Junction upgrading project.
While Friday and Saturday traffic will remain unaffected by the works, the lane closures are expected to result in some delays with only individual lanes operating.
Motorists will also notice the gradual installation of barriers along the southbound shoulder of the Khyber Pass Viaduct. These will be installed in conjunction with the above activities to provide a work area for future construction. The barriers will remain in place until mid next year.
Further information about Transit’s Central Motorway Junction is available from the public information centre at the corner of Stanley St & Alten Rd or by phoning 0800 ToFreeflow (0800 863 733).
