Protest at the Banks and Hay led Auckland City Council

The Council Housing Action Group and others will be gathering outside the Town Hall, Queen Street, Auckland from 5.30pm on Thursday 10th October to protest, yet again, at the behaviour and values of the Banks and Hay led Auckland City Council.

The full Council will meet at 6pm to discuss and approve the recently announced deal that Housing New Zealand buy all of Auckland City’s housing stock. CHAG will join others from Wake Up Auckland to condemn the Council for having abdicated its responsibility for social housing, for forcing the government and taxpayer to save the properties from being lost to the private sector, as well as for causing such stress and uncertainty over the past year.

“To extract full market price for a block sale of nearly 120 general residential units is greedy and bloody minded, and would seem to reflect a lack of real commitment to social housing on behalf of this Council led by Mayor John Banks and Deputy Mayor David Hay, despite what both of them might say,” says Sigrid Shayer, CHAG spokesperson. “But then they, and others of the ACRN block of councillors, specifically voted against an amendment at the infamous March Council meeting to give HNZ a first option to buy before putting the residential houses on the open market.”

While the Council Housing Action Group is very relieved that all the houses will remain in the public sector, the values of this Council need to be challenged.
