Tonks Ave inner-city community garden's 1st birthday bash
On the first day of spring this year not only do the flowers start coming out and dad's get to sleep in but Wellington's
possibly first inner-city community garden celebrates its first birthday.
The local Wellington group Growing Community planted their first seeds and fruit trees in the Tonks garden last year as
a protest against the proposed inner-city 'bypass'. Around fifty people from the local and more distant community joined
them.
Since then they have planted and prepared a community garden between Kensington Street and the top of Victoria Street,
which is hard to miss with its murals and vege beds and anonymous messages on the bilboards across the road. Another
garden was also started on Buller Street but the hard packed soil needed some conditioning over the winter months,
planting is planned there later on in the year.
The birthday bash on Sunday September 1st is loosely planned as a day of gardening, relaxing in the early spring rays,
chatting with friends and neighbours, an outdoor picnic and hopefully some entertainment from local buskers from between
10am and 5pm. Yes, there will be a cake.
So come along and get involved in your community and your environment in New Zealand's oldest colonial street and the
