Streamlined Committee Structure For Auckland City Council
A streamlined committee structure will bring greater efficiency to Auckland City Council’s day to day business, says Deputy Mayor David Hay.
The council tonight resolved to run with a structure comprising eight standing committees, compared with the previous council’s 17. Sub-committees will be similarly slashed – pruned to a lean four compared with the 17 sub-committees and 14 working parties under the previous regime.
Cr Hay, architect of the new-look structure, says time wasting will be reduced as a result of the change, driven home in a 13 to seven vote.
“Staff will be able to more efficiently support a streamlined committee structure,” he said. The council will be more accountable, decision-making will be easier and efficiency will be improved.
“The organisation will be run in a manner befitting the business it is. This will end the befuddled decision-making arising from the former overblown structure where the right hand often did not know what the left was doing.”
The eight committees are: recreation and events, city development, strategy and governance, works, community services, transport, finance and corporate business and law and order.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor have
voting rights on all committees.
There are two enterprise boards – zoo (chaired by Cr Geoff Abbott) and art gallery (chaired by Cr William Cairns) – two discretionary sub-committees – audit and assessors (Cr David Hay) and planning fixtures (Cr Juliet Yates) and two Government-required sub-committees – creative community and Hillary Commission funding.
