Auckland – Gateway to a GE Free New Zealand

Auckland – Gateway to a GE Free New Zealand

“A GE Free Auckland is what the community wants. Making Auckland the Gateway to a GE Free New Zealand will have huge economic benefits and bring Auckland international acclaim. ” says Metiria Turei, mayoral candidate for the Green Party Auckland.

10,000 people turned out on Saturday to the GE Free Rally, demonstrating the depth of feeling that Aucklanders’ have for this issue. The march, from QE II Square to Aotea Square, included families, celebrities and a strong and eloquent Maori presence.

“GE is contrary to tikanga Maori and cannot be reconciled. A committment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a committment to a GE Free city.” says Metiria Turei.

“Aucklanders desire for a GE free environment, is greater than their willingness to accept transgenic food. “ says Mrs Turei. “Hand in hand with the growing concern over GE is the increasing demand for organic produce. People in this city have a common sense approach to their food and recognise quality when they taste it.”

Following Nelson City’s lead, Aucklanders want to declare their city GE Free. The Green Party has shown leadership on this issue from the outset. And now, through its mayoral candidate, Metiria Turei, Aucklanders can finally formalise their commitment to a GE Free city.
