Councillor Robert Shaw supports Jenny Brash

Shaw supports Brash

Robert Shaw will not contest the Porirua mayoralty in the October elections.

He is to concentrate on the campaign to support Kenepuru Hospital and to stand for the health board.

Mr Shaw said today Jenny Brash "deserved to have another term, and that it was in the interests of the city that she continues".

"Jenny is a genuine person and she has made no major blunders."

"Two terms is reasonable for a mayor, because it takes time to learn the job and to establish a network of contacts. "

"Each councillor has one vote at the table, and the mayor is no exception. Each councillor shares equally responsibility for the performance of the council."

"The Porirua Council has to tighten its belt and bring rates down to a level that is consistent with those in neighboring cities. "

"The high cost of living and doing business in Porirua slows our growth. Both population growth and business growth are a worry."

"Slow growth puts a financial burden on us all. It is a vicious cycle."

"With the departure of John Burke and then John Seddon, councillors felt a new freedom and the result was they gave away the idea of financial prudence. "

"Council has taken on new functions and built high costs into its operations. "

"We now need to reduce staff numbers, be less extravagant, and focus on core business. "

"The challenge for the council today is to tighten the performance indicators and other controls that it has on management. "
