Nominations received for this year’s Christchurch City Council annual environmental awards have been whittled down to a short list.

Judges will make an inspection of the short-listed entries on Friday 17 August before deciding on winners in three categories of the Built Environment, the Natural Environment and Services to the Environment.

This is the fourth year of the awards and the winners will be announced and presented with special medallions and certificates at a ceremony in the Our City premises, Municipal Chambers, at the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Boulevard on Friday 28 September.

The awards are made by the City Council on the recommendation of the Environment Committee that is advised by a special panel.

The chairwoman of the committee, Cr. Anna Crighton, says the awards recognise outstanding contributions to the city’s built, natural and services to the environment.

In the first year of the awards Peacock Springs and Christ’s College were winners and in 1999 the Broadoaks housing subdivision, Riccarton Bush and the Summit Road Society were winners. Last year the winners were: Services to the Environment - Christchurch Beautifying Association; Built – New Brighton Pier and Library; and Natural – McLeans Island Recreational Area.

The number of entries for this year’s awards exceeded those of previous years.
