Designers: Put Your Mark On Auckland

Auckland’s creative talent is being asked to “put their mark on Auckland” by entering a design competition for the branding and theming of Auckland’s public transport network.

The competition has been launched by the Auckland Regional Council, in association with all of the local councils of the region.

The councils are jointly working to make a quantum leap in the quality of Auckland's public transport system. “We aim to ensure public transport operates as one continuous network, with high consistent service standards across the network, integrated ticketing and user-friendly connections between services,” said ARC Transport Committee chairman Les Paterson.

“An important part of creating an integrated network is creating a united identity for the network – a consistent brand across all of its elements, and a coherent theme for the stations.”

“This competition is very important for Auckland – we are asking the design community to come up with a look for Auckland’s public transport for possibly generations to come,” said Cr Paterson. “We are looking for a broad selection of bright ideas.”

Designers, architects, marketers and branding experts are being asked to combine their creative talents and put some simple brand concepts and theming of stations together for consideration by a judging panel by 13 July. Then five finalists will be chosen to further develop their ideas in detail. The finalists’ concepts will be displayed in all four cities and the public will be asked to comment on them.

“The lifeblood of every international city is its transport network. People spend thousands of hours every year on and around public transport, they are important public spaces. We want to create a look for the network that Aucklanders can be proud of,” said Cr Paterson.

Designers are being asked to come up with both a branding system for the network, and with a kitset of elements for station design. Heritage stations are being considered as a separate class.

The competition brief is on the ARC website at www.arc.govt.nz/about/transpt/trnspt.

An open briefing for designers (media may attend) is being held at the former Auckland CPO on Wednesday 27 June from 2pm.
