Former Avondale Three Guys Supermarket Site To Be Redeveloped
Auckland City Council is to sell what was part of the old Three Guys Supermarket site on Great North Road, Avondale, for
a mixed retail and residential development while retaining the remainder of the site for much needed free public
parking.
In announcing the sale, subject to the obtaining of the necessary resource consents, Councillor Frank Ryan said this was
the progress the Avondale business community and the local sports clubs had been seeking for some time.
"This is a win-win situation all round," says Councillor Ryan. "It will permanently secure a car parking area for the
nearby sports clubs while encouraging the sort of mixed residential and retail development that will mean a revitalised
town centre and make Avondale a good place to live.
"The introduction of a range of new shops to service the wider community will be an added attraction for the town and
will go a long way to making the area a true service centre for the residents".

Councillor Ryan is confident that the type of residential-retail development that is proposed will be acceptable to the
community.
"We are talking about strip retail development which is really just a continuance of the small retail operations
fronting Great North Road, something which the Avondale Business Association is encouraging," he said.
The agreement with the developer of the retail and housing complex, Rawson Developments Ltd, requires Rawsons to consult
at all times with Auckland City Council with regard to traffic control, parking design, aesthetic design and residential
component details.
The developer will also be required to provide additional car parks to service the retail shops.
With the demise of the Three Guys Supermarket, chain the land was originally bought by Challenge Petroleum. Auckland
City subsequently purchased the rear portion in February 1999 on the basis that part of the property would be used to
meet the car parking needs of the adjoining rugby and netball facilities.
